I read the sample and was somewhat turned on by the different approach to a paranormal romance story. (Succubus falling for immortal teenager sounds original and interesting) SPOILER ALERTI'll start off by saying that I was so mad that I spent any money on this book.
Here are the reasons why:
-The chapters abruptly end leaving the reader thinking, "Where's the rest of the chapter?" Apparently the author doesn't believe in transitions.
-Each chapter has multiple characters' perspectives in them. There is no suspense building or mystery because everything that all the characters are feeling is in one paragraph. This makes things confusing because one second I'm in Hannah's head and the next second I'm in Jake's.
-Take about a rushed storyline! The characters fall in love instantly, no suspense building and no characterization. The second half of the book is rushed to the max, with the author introducing random characters in order to perform amazing paranormal feats so the bad guys can be `taken care of' in less then 100 pages.
-If you're looking for steamy scenes, don't read this book. The start of something somewhat steamy happens and then the scene cuts off. I know this is probably to keep the book G-rated, but the alleged steamy scenes were part of the reason I purchased this book, and if you're going to write a book about a Succubus do it right and describe something past first base.
-I felt the characters were unable to be shocked or feel a strong feeling of disbelief. For example, when Lily and Jake tell each other what they really are, they instantly accept the facts and start making out. It's like the characters are thinking, "Cool, you're 500 years old and that's not odd. Kiss me." Or, "Neat, you can kill someone with a kiss, let's start dating!"
-The main conflict is just bizarre. I won't give too much away, but I felt the author came up with the storyline overnight.
I gave the book two stars because I have not run across a book about a Succubus before and I'll reward the author with originality. Also, I read about half way before I started skim reading and realizing that the book wasn't getting any better.

Mesmerized eBook Julia Crane Talia Jager Reviews
Mesmerized is not a bad book. Not at all. It's actually pretty great, my only problem is that I felt like the Author rushed through the book. I didn't get the whole "reading-experience" that I would have liked. The story was good, but the characters felt rushed and their emotions didn't feel quite real to me. i would have wanted the Author to take some time and focus a bit more of the characters feelings, not just rushing it and writing "I'm scared," and not explaining her feelings. Was she nauseous? her heart jumping in her chest? Sweat cradling her palms? stuff like that. Other than that, the book was great.
Lily is a succubus. Gorgeous, kind and not the ordinary bitchy-girl. I actually liked her even if I felt that she weren't written in the best way. Lily is used to rumors and girls hating her and boys falling over them self at just looking at her. Literally. So imagen her surprise when she actually get a female-friend and a boy she likes at her new school. Then, BANG, everything changes when something that happens to Lily have bad consequences. That's one of the thing that irritated me a little, I felt like it was rushed. Very, very rushed. One thing happened, and the next moment, they're across the world. Well, not literally, but you understand what I mean? And I absolutely couldn't stand Lily's mother. Ugh. That was probably the reason the Author wrote her mother in that way, but still.
Then there's Jake. Handsome, a little bad, kind, sweet and well, mostly what you read in the books nowadays. I still want a Jake in my life though.
And I'm so, so, so happy that the Author chose to write sexual content. Even if it weren't exactly sexual, it was still more than the Authors today write in their books, and me myself don't get why authors don't want to write sexual content in YA books. I get that it an "adult subject" but most teenagers do have sexual contact and read/do/want more than kissing. It's just the way things are.
Mesmerized is a good book, but if you want a heavy summer-read or a book to last through a whole trip, you would probably want to bring a second book with you because it's not so long.
Do I recommend this book? Yes. I do. It was a new world I haven't read that much about, and the whole succubus-thing fascinates me.
I do wish that the book was more thought-through and felt more real.
Four stars because of I didn't connect with the characters the way I would have liked through this book. It just felt too half-hearted.
