I stayed up until 2am to finish the book, engrossed in the story and in the characters' development. The dialogue, the friendships- both blossoming and established- all were entirely engaging. Although Caleb is raw and aggressive, dismissive and insensitive, he is given the adequate number of pages to evolve. It's difficult to give this book less than full stars, and yet I have to take one away for the ending. As a Samantha Young fan, I know that she often revisits her characters, building worlds that have multiple layers, connections that cross pages, texts and decades. If the story matters, the characters matter, and the emotional layers matter, then WHY end this book the way she did? I understand the plot choices and the manner in which the characters physically land, but why absolve him so effortlessly? There is a disturbing trend to treat a character's wounds too quickly across final chapters, to break them apart viciously in the penultimate chapter and then to sally forth into happiness and instant forgiveness. The scenes with Ava and Caleb in the 4/5ths pages are gripping, honest, hand-shakingly good. I felt so incredibly disappointed with the rapidity of the closing sequence, and wished Ava could have had more time to be hurt. Yes, she stands up for herself. Yes, she recognizes her growth and adjustment. But... she also accepts Caleb's rudeness as part of his character, stops demanding he speak to her differently because the chemistry is so strong? Because he can find all her ladybits so effortlessly? If what she said to him mattered, truly, and his reply is what she gets in return, then I wanted more emotional honesty from him before she flew off into the sunset with him. So, this was darling, truly impressive, but I felt denied at the end and wanted a better denouement.

Fight or Flight Samantha Young author 9780349419312 Books Reviews

What happens when you encounter a stranger who is rude and doesn't seem to have any manners in an airport when you are both stuck there due to flight cancellations. You end up continuing to run into each other until you end up getting to know each other, not sure if you really like him but then end up having a one night stand! This is what happens to Ava Breevort and Caleb Scott. Oh, by the way, Caleb is Scottish and has the swoony accent.

When they both land in Boston, Ava and Caleb went their separate ways but somehow fate brought them back together. They decide to have a casual relationship since Caleb is only in town on business for a couple of weeks but things never work out as you have plan. The two of them get to know each other better and find out about some of each other's past. But both of them are scare of relationships and commitment and seem to agree that they don't want these things.

When Caleb is promoted and moves from Scotland to Boston, he and Ava spend quite a lot of time together and what they really have is a relationship! When they realize what has happened, they are not sure what to do. They each must deal with their tragic past and hopefully get through it and build on their own relationship!

Great story with humor, sarcasm, painful pasts and a sexy Scot!
Fight or Flight started off with a bang. I enjoyed Ava and Caleb’s bantering when they came across one another at the airport. The first 20% was fabulous but slowly the story took a dive. I had hoped that their bantering would turn to romance but I had to look somewhere else for that. There wasn’t romance between Ava and Caleb. Just sex. Friends with benefits and even there it felt superficial. Eva had too much inner dialogue and I really didn’t care that much about her work as a interior designer. Caleb was a closed off book who wouldn’t share his feelings so I couldn’t feel the connection between them at all. What I really enjoyed was Ava’s friendship with Harper. I guess my expectations got the best of me cause Fight or Flight was a disappointment.
Lately I’ve been addicted to reading Contemporary Romance novels. I just can’t seem to get enough of them! And I love Samantha Young! I read her Hart’s Boardwalk series, and a view of her other books and I just loved them all. So when ‘Fight or Flight’ came up on my as a buy suggestion I knew I just had to have a copy. And don’t you just love that cover?

In ‘Fight or Flight’ we meet Ava Breevort. Ava is trying to get away from her old hometown as fast as she cans after burying her childhood friend. Unfortunately a cloud of volcanic ash in Europe has made problems for all flights and Ava’s flight is delayed. This wouldn’t be the worst thing ever, but Ava is forced to sit next to a very rude Scotsman Caleb Scott. Ava and Caleb bump heads in everything. But there is a physical attraction between the two of them they both can’t deny. And when fate seems to force them together they find themselves in a passionate affair.. but it’s sex only. They still can’t stand each other.. Obviously!

From the moment I started reading ‘Fight and Flight’ I was hooked. I never have a lot problems with ‘seeing’ the book in my mind while reading, but with this one it was like I was watching a movie from the very start. I just was hooked to these pages and didn’t want to stop reading. (Baby girls nap time definitely came in handy!) Not only was this book romantic, sexy and filled with great characters I also found myself smiling a lot. There was definitely humor but also some heartbreak. Yep, this book was an emotional rollercoaster!

The two main characters Ava and Caleb were really fun to get to know. They both have had their share of grieve over the years and they both have lost faith in love. And I just loved the way these characters where with each other. Especially in the beginning they didn’t like each other at all and they both make assumptions based on each other’s looks. Assumptions you can imagine having yourself too. The chemistry between Ava and Caleb just flew from the pages and I just couldn’t get enough of them. This book definitely gave me all the feels and not only because of the romance, but because this book just had it all.

Not only the two main characters where great, the other characters in the book were also very fun to read about and it makes me hope for new books about them. Ava’s best friend Harper definitely deserves her own book. And Caleb’s brother Jamie.. Well, let me tell you I have their story all figured out in my head!! LOL.

If you didn’t already love Samantha Young, ‘Fight and Flight’ will definitely make you love her. I’m already looking for my next Samantha Young read!
